After years studying the epidemic of burnout and the search for meaning among America’s healthcare workforce, a team of researchers and practitioners have developed a toolkit that provides concrete models—from Balint Groups to supper clubs—to help clinicians and leaders bring community into their clinics. Attunement is the process of feeling connected and understood which opens the space for learning and growth. This interactive session will present the FAN (Facilitating Attuned Interactions), a widely used conceptual framework and practical navigational tool for attunement to self and other within helping relationships. Providers learn to read cues for engagement and flexibly respond to match their interactions to what the other is showing they are most able to use in the moment. The session will actively engage the participants in the attunement process and strengthen both mindful self-regulation and self-compassion.

The First Day film premiered on ESPN on July 16, 2019 and since then a conversation has started in school systems and communities across the country on the topics of substance use and mental wellness with a focus on the beginning. Compassion in Action Conference attendees are invited to a free screening of The First Day film followed by a Q&A with Chris Herren and filmmaker Jonathan Hock to mark the 1-Year release of the film.

Clinical encounters in intensive care settings can result in psychological trauma for patients, families and medical staff, yet only rarely is there psychological assistance to help to cope with such trauma. Here, a clinical nurse manager and a clinical psychologist, both from the neo-natal ICU, discuss the ways in which the psychologist helped the staff to better understand their own emotional reactions at a deeper level, which proved profoundly beneficial both to staff and to the parents of the desperately ill babies.

This workshop will enable participants to shift their conception of serious illness discussions from “breaking bad news” to “sharing emotionally challenging news” by practicing specific and teachable micro-skills. People who use drugs and those with substance use disorder are deeply impacted by stigma and discrimination, which limit access to medical care and effective treatment. In addition, our society’s drug policy and approach towards people who use drugs has been fueled by racism. Health professionals and caregivers often are skilled in extending compassion and support to those around them but may have difficulty offering themselves the same kindness and understanding, especially when they fail to meet their own expectations or when they experience a difficult or undesirable patient outcome. Self-compassion–or comforting and caring for oneself under trying circumstances–can mitigate feelings of isolation and improve workplace performance. This workshop will focus on reflective writing as a tool for cultivating self-compassion. Participants will leave with writing prompts and strategies for developing and maintaining a reflective writing practice that fosters self-compassion.

Compassion in healthcare starts with connection. In order to connect, healthcare providers must be able to communicate effectively with patients. However, many patients face barriers that impact their communication related to their diagnosis, health literacy or primary language. This session will provide an overview of two training models implemented in a rehabilitation hospital system to train allied health staff, nurses and patient care technicians on evidence-based supportive communication strategies and share pilot effectiveness data. Healthcare providers encounter patients and circumstances every day that lead to compassion fatigue, moral distress and burnout. Research indicates that interventions at the institutional level provide the most significant relief from burnout. However, other studies indicate that personal qualities, skills and interventions are responsible for nearly a third of one’s professional well-being. This session will present the work of two innovative offices that support well-being and promote compassionate care at Loma Linda University Health. The Office of Employee Spiritual Care and the Office of Physician Vitality offer physicians, medical trainees and healthcare professionals interventions through education, programming, training, research and direct care. The session will share an institutional model for the work, as well as aims and efforts to address the hidden curriculum, teach whole person care, and enhance the biopsychosocial-spiritual wellness of employees and physicians. Attendees will have an opportunity to explore personal well-being and consider a variety of tools and resources that can be implemented to promote compassionate care.

Come experience an evidence-based curriculum that pivoted to a one-hour online format during COVID. The new format provides tools for healthcare professionals to manage burnout, empathy fatigue and moral distress in today’s constantly changing healthcare landscape. You will leave the session with coping tools for yourself and a format to replicate in your institution immediately following the workshop. In our quantitative research with this format, 97% of participants experienced a decrease in anxiety from before to after attending, averaging a 40% decrease overall. Qualitatively, many report feeling more grounded in their calling as compassionate caregivers and more equipped to stay present with themselves and their patients during this global crisis.

Clinicians are rarely taught how to handle the intense emotions experienced in clinical practice. These unprocessed emotions may result in chronic stress and social isolation. Trauma from patient care may be compounded by a personal history of past trauma, the lack of opportunity to safely debrief, a focus on helping others while ignoring our own needs, and institutional productivity and performance metrics. In this workshop, we use guided imagery, self-compassion, and reflective writing to explore how participants relate to the wounded healer archetype and to highlight our strengths as wounded healers. Participants will leave with new awareness and evidence-based skills that promote self-care and enhance professional well-being.

The 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey found that 23% of respondents did not see a doctor when needed because of fear of being mistreated and 33% of those who saw a healthcare provider had at least one negative experience related to being transgender. Based on this data and additional community input, we knew that we needed to create a new model of patient-centered care using a framework of cultural humility in order to better serve these patients. In primary care, interventions to improve patient experience have traditionally been limited to scripted communication tools. At Community Care Cooperative (C3), a MassHealth ACO founded and governed by FQHCs, we followed the research showing that customer service is a symptom of workforce satisfaction. We also recognized that front line staff at FQHCs may not have regular access to development opportunities. In this session we will share our approach to improving patient experience through developing and implementing trainings for front line supervisors and staff that focused on strengthening teams through understanding burnout and moral injury, resilience, trauma-informed communication, and communicating with empathy.

During this hour, we will interview Laura Crooks, co-founder of Chad’s Legacy Project and CEO of Yakima Children’s Village. Ms. Crooks provides us with powerful insights on how her lived experience as a parent and advocate for her child navigating the mental healthcare system highlights the need for compassion and real action to improve mental health care. This taps into the idea of compassion beyond the emotional piece and into an empowered stance where people can contribute at every level. We also address the stigma, specifically around how it impacts care, how it is carried in the diagnosis for the patient, caregivers, family members as well as the system as a whole perpetuating it. Laura emphasizes the importance of approaching these challenges with this recognition of the vulnerabilities of the system and the people working in them with compassion rather than blame. We explore how we can build on that compassion to inviting people to change rather than leading with blame. Finally, we review the importance of providing compassionate care to patients as well as between caregivers, stressing the idea of compassion that extends beyond the clinical care and into the office of providers and clinicians as a means of addressing burnout and insuring the delivering of better overall care.

A dramatic rise in anti-immigrant rhetoric and enforcement policies since the 2016 presidential campaign has included increased immigration arrests, detention, and family separation. These policies and rhetoric have had a chilling effect on immigrant patients and their families seeking healthcare. It is imperative for healthcare professionals to address this fear by focusing compassion and empathy on their immigrant patients and their families and helping them to find additional resources. Compassionate care may encompass individual, institutional or local advocacy. This panel will equip healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and tools to safeguard immigrant patients and ease their heightened fear and anxieties, whether in a clinical encounter, at healthcare facilities, or in detention.

Peer recovery coaching is a breakthrough intervention aimed at breaking down stigma, eliminating bias, and providing compassionate and culturally sensitive care. This panel aims to highlight how a community-based primary care with a large Latinx patient population has successfully embedded recovery coaching as a culturally responsive intervention to aid patients with substance use disorders.

Compassion fatigue is a term commonly used to describe the distress and emotional disengagement of clinicians who are responding to the suffering of patients. However, the emerging neuroscience of compassion calls into question the accuracy of defining this distressed and disengaged state as being a consequence of compassion. This workshop will unpack the definitional conundrums surrounding our understanding of empathy and compassion and will highlight the way in which definitional clarity can contribute to better understanding and design of well-being interventions. Examples of interventions designed to promote emotional regulation and compassion will be shared.
