Fernando Stein, MD, FAAP

Fernando Stein, MD, FAAP, is the immediate past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a current member of its Board of Directors. He is one of the original members of the AAP Taskforce on Minorities and made health and wellness of pediatricians an AAP priority during his tenure as president.

Stein is a practicing pediatrician and critical care specialist delivering bedside care for the past 35 years. He serves as professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and associate chief of the section of critical care at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, focusing on the intricacies of caring for children with critical illness and technological dependency.

As a member of the technical advisors of the Pan American Health Organization for the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses, he has been extremely active in advocacy for children in impoverished environments at the global level.

Stein is an honorary member of 14 international medical societies. He has received three honorary doctorates and is the recipient of more than 30 national and international honors and awards for his contributions to education and the care of children around the world.
